Brigham's Farmhouse on Salt Lake City Tour
The Salt Lake City Tour takes you to such historic pioneer sights as the Brigham Young Farmhouse on the beautiful foothills of the mountains above Salt Lake City. Built in 1863 and relocated to its current spot at This is the Place Heritage Park in 1976, the stucco farmhouse was a showplace of Brigham's for foreign dignitaries and visiting guests. Brigham never lived in this house but he held square dances, musical performances, and dinner parties in the second-story ballroom of the home, which was designed in the tradition of New England inns. The adjacent farm was an agricultural experiment allowing them to test which crops would grow in the unfamiliar desert climate and soil of Utah. They grew alfalfa, sugar beets, mulberry seedlings, raised silkworms, and served as the dairy farm for Brigham's family.
The most popular sightseeing attractions in Salt Lake City are Temple Square, which includes the Mormon Tabernacle where the Mormon Tabernacle Choir performs on Sundays and rehearses on Thursdays, as well as where a daily organ recital occurs; the Salt Lake Temple, which is not open to the public but the gardens around the Mormon Temple provide a great setting for photography; the Joseph Smith Memorial Building, formerly a luxury hotel called the Hotel Utah; City Creek Center, a billion-dollar shopping center with landscaping that includes waterfalls and water fountains; and the Family History Library, the world's largest genealogy library. Salt Lake Mormon Tabernacle Organ Recital on Salt Lake City Tour
Hear the world-famous Salt Lake Mormon Tabernacle organ recital on Temple Square during the Salt Lake City Tour. Or enjoy the Tabernacle organ as it complements the voices of the 360 choristers of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir on the Thursday evening Mormon Tabernacle Choir Rehearsal & City Tour or the Sunday morning Mormon Tabernacle Choir Concert & City Tour.
Located in the historic Tabernacle building on Salt Lake City's Temple Square, the organ was built by an English convert to the Mormon church, Joseph Ridges. Though the original casework and some of the original pipes are found in the Tabernacle organ today, it has actually been rebuilt and enlarged multiple times over the last 135 years. Currently the organ has 11,623 pipes organized into 147 tone colors and 206 ranks or rows of pipes! The pipes are made of wood, zinc, lead and tin, with the pipes of the facade original from the 1860s, made of wood staves fashioned from Utah pine trees. The organ pipes are controlled from a console with five 61-note keyboards and a 32-note pedal board. The longest pipe has a speaking length of 32 feet, and the shortest is 3/4 of an inch. The organ requires two full time technicians to maintain this instrument and others on Temple Square.
Utah Copper Mine & Capitol on Salt Lake City Tour
The neoclassical dome of the Utah State Capitol has an architectural element that has become a common symbol of democracy in the United States. The outer dome towers over 250 feet from the base of the front stairs. The shell of the dome is made of Utah's own copper, installed in 1980, to replace the original copper covering after portions were blown off in a heavy windstorm. In the background is the Kennecott Utah Copper Mine, where 25% of America's copper is produced.
